Despite tensions between India and Pakistan remaining high after abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir, New Delhi has decided to extend an invite to the Pakistani Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan Niazi for the annual meeting of the council of heads of government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) which it will host later this year, people aware of the development said, rep+orts Hindustan Times.

However, the final decision on whether Khan will attend the meeting or not will be made by Islamabad. The invitation will be extended as per the protocol and convention.

It should be noted that this would mark the first instance that India will be hosting the meeting of the council of heads of the governments of the SCO. India joined the grouping as a full-fledged member in June of 2017.

Earlier, India had been an observer of the SCO since 2005 and has actively partaken in its ministerial-level meetings of the grouping which focus mainly on security and economic cooperation in the Eurasian region.

The grouping itself was founded in 2001 by the then presidents of Russia, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
