In a rare instance, the Defence Ministry has empowered the three armed forces with emergency financial powers under which they can freely procure equipment worth up to Rs 300 crore on a priority basis, reports The Hindu.
This decision, which was taken earlier in the month comes in the aftermath of the Pulwama suicide bombing attack and heightened tensions between India and Pakistan resulting in Balakot airstrikes and unending ceasefire violations from across the border.
Under the newly granted powers, the Indian Army will now procure Spike-LR Anti-Tank Missiles from Israel and Igla-S Very Short Range Air Defence Systems (VSHORAD) from Russia.
Regarding the Spike-LR (Long Range) missiles, some defence officials have indicated that testing was not required as the missile is operational and in service across the world and if needed tests would be carried out in the home country (Israel).
In respect to VSHORAD, the Defence Ministry is presently involved in contract negotiations through the regular route. However, the present acquisition under the emergency route would have no impact on that process.
Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
