In a bid to make the Indian Army a lean and mean fighting machine, the Army brass has agreed “in-principle” to restructure their headquarters. As part of the process, the Rashtriya Rifles’ (RR) headquarters is to be shifted from New Delhi to Jammu and Kashmir. The move is said to logically make sense as the RR are primarily engaged in counter-insurgency operations in J&K.

Along with a shift in the RR headquarters, the other proposal relates to shifting the Directorate-General of Military Training (DGMT) to Shimla, where the Army Training Command (ARTRAC) is based. Aspects relating to military training and working philosophy are handled by the ARTRAC and it is felt that shifting the DGMT to Shimla would impart a cohesiveness to approach.

It is expected that the above proposals along with the reports on cadre review, increase in pensionable tenure of jawans and merging of separate operational blocks into one vertical would come up for consideration during the Army Commanders’ conference set to take place in the national capital next month.
