Army To Move A Classified Proposal Worth Rs 300 Crore To Buy Modern Weapons For Special Forces

The Indian army is set to move a classified proposal for the purchase of modern weapons, India Today reported on Sunday. The proposal can be moved at a key Defence Ministry meeting planned next week and is expected to be worth Rs 300 crore.
According to the report, the government is expected to buy M4A1 automatic rifles from the US through the Foreign Military Sales route to equip India’s elite nine Para (Special Forces) battalions. While the para battalions raised in the past have modern weapons to support their needs, those being raised in now face shortage.
Acceding to a source quoted by India Today in its report, the Army has plans to buy around 10,000 free-fall parachutes, 1,100 personal automatic rifles, 30-each sniper rifles, and automatic General Purpose Machine Guns, 24 lightweight rocket launchers, 20 shotguns and 500 pistols.
These modern weapons will make operations easy for the special forces of the army as they are light weight and more efficient. Under the procedure that the army plans to follow, bureaucratic red tape will be cut short and the forces will coordinate directly with the integrated financial advisors for processing their procurement cases.
