Finance Minister returning to work (@FinMinIndia/Twitter)
Arun Jaitley is back to work as Finance Minister of India, Times Of India has reported. He is back after a renal transplant operation. Since his treatment, Jaitley has been staying in a controlled environment as per the advice of doctors for close to four months. However, he was present in Rajya Sabha during election of the vice president.
After returning to office, he held a meeting with key officials. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had been given additional charge of the ministry while he was recuperating. Jaitley has also taken charge the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
“The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, “The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has directed to assign the portfolios of the Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs to Arun Jaitley”, an official statement said.
While away from office, the minister has been vocal on issues including national register of citizens in Assam, Gross Domestic Product figures, Rafale deal and no confidence motion in the parliament. The government has implemented key reforms including goods and services tax, insolvency and bankruptcy code and demonetisation under the tenure of Jaitley in finance ministry.
