Separatist leader Asiya Andrabi.
A probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has revealed that separatist leader Asiya Andrabi, who heads the all-female Islamist outfit ‘Dukhtaran-e-Millat’, diverted money she received from hawala channels, meant to propagate separatism in the Kashmir Valley, to fund her son’s studies abroad in Malaysia, reports Oneindia.
The funds which were remitted to Andrabi by Zahoor Ahamad Shah Watali through hawala channels ended up in bank accounts belonging to her son, Mohammad bin Qasim, who was pursuing higher education at a university in Malaysia.
Watali has been identified as a hawala conduit who used to transfer funds he received from Pakistan, ISI, the UAE. He had created shell companies to facilite the transfer of said funds, which were to be used to pay separatists and stone pelters in the Kashmir Valley.
A number of cases are registerd against Dukhtaran-e-Millat, Hizbul Mujahideen, Jamaat-ud-Dawah, Hizbul Mujahideen and other proscribed organisations in relation to terror financing by the NIA.
Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
