The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police has put under scanner four individuals including research scholars for promising people to get their names added in the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) which is set to be published on 31 August against monetary donations, reports New Indian Express.

Commenting on the development, Additional Director General (ADG) of the CID, L R Bishnoi confirmed that his department had received some complaints in this regard and that his department is conducting an active enquiry in the matter.

The four involved in the activity include Ashraful Hussain who is a social activist, and two students of the Gauhati University - Rehna Sultana and Sofiqul Islam, the former being a PhD student, and a Hague-based PhD researcher named Mausami Chetia.

It has been reported that the four were leveraging social media to garner donations from people against the promises of getting their names appended to the draft NRC list. It has been alleged that the donation money was being collected in two bank accounts.

It has also been alleged that the four accused were using the recent scrapping of Article 370 to link the issue with ongoing NRC to create panic in the minds of the people in order to dupe them.
