Assam election results

The counting for the 126 assembly seats in Assam for which polling was held in three phases has begun on Sunday (2 May) amid Covid-19 protocol.

As reported by India Today, the BJP is leading on 65 seats and the Congress alliance leads on 39.

Meanwhile, in the early trends of the Election Commission, the BJP is leading on 6 seats, while the AGP is ahead on 2 seats, Congress and Bodoland People's Front on one seat each.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is leading in term of voteshare bagging 41.5 per cent of votes while Congress secured 30.6 per cent of the votes counted, according to the Election Commission data.

The Sarbananda Sonowal-Himanta Biswa Sarma combine in Assam is seeking to retain power in Assam, with Himanta emerging as the tallest leader in the state, thereby positioning himself as a potential Chief Ministerial candidate. The BJP faces a tough fight from the combined forces of the Congress and Badruddin Ajmal led AIUDF.

The counting of votes are being held in 50 Election Districts (34 administrative districts) amid three tiers of security put in place in and around the counting centres and adjoining areas.

According to the election officials, around 82.4 per cent of the 2,33,74,087-strong electorate including 1,15,50,403 women cast their votes in the three phase election to the 126-member Assam Assembly.

This year's voting percentage is 2.59 per cent less than in the 2016 elections, where 84.63 per cent of the 1,99,90,755-strong electorate had exercised their franchise.

In the previous state assembly elections conducted in 2016, BJP had formed the government in Assam for the first time ever by winning 86 of the state’s 126 assembly constituencies.
