Assam: BJP To Move SC Seeking NRC Re-Verification After Hindu Refugees Form Majority Of Excluded Individuals

The Bharat Janata Party has decided to move the Supreme Court seeking re-verification of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) data for Assam which released on 31 August and excluded more than 19 lakh people from the list, reports India Today.

According to Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is Assam’s Finance Minister and BJP’s face in the northeast, the party would file petition in the SC asking for a re-verification of 20 per cent of the sample NRC data in the districts of the state that are bordering Bangladesh.

Furthermore, the party will also seek re-verification of 10 per cent of samples from the other districts of the state.

As per the report, the party was in for a surprise after release of the NRC data as many people from the border districts, where there is a denser population, made it to the list. It was reportedly presumed that majority of them were illegal Bangladeshis.

"We have lost hope in the present form of the NRC right after the draft. When so many genuine Indians are left out, how can you claim that this document is a red letter for the Assamese society?" Sarma was quoted in the report as saying.

As per the report, the majority of people left out in the final NRC list released are Bengali Hindu refugees who came to Assam before 1971, or people who could not furnish enough documents.

More than 19 lakh people were left out in the final NRC list, which included names of 30.1 million people as Indian citizens.
