Hundreds of angry villagers came out in the streets on Wednesday (17 April) to protest killing of a Bharatiya Janata Party worker in lower Assam’s Dhubri district, reports Times of India.

According to the report, the BJP worker, identified as Ruben Roy, was killed on Tuesday (16 April) by two to four unidentified gunmen, following which large number of villagers took to the streets to protest against the incident.

Roy, who was a homeopathy practitioner, was gunned down in front of his residence. The attackers fired four bullets, two of which hit Roy and killed him on the spot.

As per the report, speculations are rife that it could be a political angle to the killing. However, local sources were cited in the report as saying that it could also be a case of personnel vendetta. A case has been registered by the police and investigation is going on.

The polling in Dhubri is scheduled for 23 April in the third and final phase of the elections in the state.
