One of India’s most well-known paramilitary forces, the Assam Rifles, responsible for guarding large lengths of the Indo-Myanmar border in the North-East, is now looking to expand its presence to remote locations across the border in order to curb down on illegal trans-border activities, reports The New Indian Express.
A number of steps have already taken as part of this move.
"Assam Rifles is now in the process of occupying a number of additional locations all along the Indo-Myanmar Border," stated a defence release.
Once this new expansion is fully implemented, the security group will be able to take better action against activities like the smuggling of drugs, weapons, illegal immigration, etc in the border areas.
The Assam Rifles, known as the ‘Sentinels of the North East’, is active in guarding parts of the border in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram, and coordinates with the Indian Army’s Eastern Command with a variety of operations in the region.
Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
