Assam: Senior Teacher Makes ‘Hijab’ Compulsory For All Girl Students Of A School In Karimganj; Stirs Controversy

A teacher from an Assam school on Saturday (14 September) fumed controversy with his social media post making it compulsory for girl students to wear hijab with their school uniforms, reports OpIndia.
In a Facebook post, AB Hannan, a senior teacher at East Point Public School in Kanishail of Karimganj district, said the move was to protect girls from “evil eyes”.
“To protect my students from evil eyes and as a part of best personality of girls today I made compulsory wearing ‘Hijab’ for my all girls students at East Point Public School, Karimganj (sic),” wrote Hannan.
The school administration, however, did not go along with Hannan views and announced that the Muslim religious veil worn by women was not compulsory for students.
According to Hindustan Times, Hannan soon had to delete the post and apologise as his post went viral and was condemned for promoting religious practices in a school.
“My post on ‘hijab’ has hurt feelings of many. Since the school authorities also didn’t give a go-ahead for the move, wearing of ‘hijab’ has been been made voluntary,” Hannan wrote on Sunday.
With an accreditation from the Secondary Education Board of Assam, the school allows students from all religious backgrounds.
