Three Assam women have accused the police of physical assault, including being stripped naked and beaten with lathis, in police custody inside an outpost in Darrang district, reports The Indian Express.

All three of them are sisters and allege that they were taken by police for a case against their brother, who allegedly abducted a Hindu woman. According to them a police team led by sub-inspector Mahendra Sarma picked them up at 1.30 am on 9 September.

Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia informed that the outpost in-charge Sarma and a woman constable Binita Boro were suspended on Tuesday and booked under criminal charges. He told an enquiry had been ordered into the matter.

The 28-year-old sister on 10 September had complained to police alleging Sarma and Boro “stripped us naked, assaulted us and touched our private parts”. However, the case was registered days after their complaint.

According to her, the police made contact with their brother through them and continued their assault even after he arrived. “He arrived with the girl at 6.30 am at the outpost. ...They beat him too. We believe the two of them (her brother and the woman) were involved in a full-fledged affair,” said the 28-year-old woman.

However, a Darrang police official said that on returning, the Hindu woman “told police that she was taken forcibly”. The man accused of abducting her is currently under arrest.
