Jammu was put on high alert following the Supreme Court verdict in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land title case on Saturday (9 November).

There have been no reports of any untoward incident from any part of Jammu province.

"Precautionary measures have been taken and the situation is peaceful across the whole province," Sanjeev Verma, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu told IANS.

Section 144 of the CrPc has been imposed in Jammu to prevent assembly of people and policemen have been deployed in sensitive areas.

Security pickets have been put up in many parts of Jammu city.

There is heavy development of police forces in the old city and many townships across Jammu region.

At many places in Jammu vehicles are being checked by the police.

"We are checking the vehicles as a precautionary measure," said a police officer deployed at the Vikram Chowk in Jammu city.

Educational institutes in all the ten districts of Jammu region have been closed for the day.

"Adequate security measures have been taken," Mukesh Singh, Inspector General, Jammu, told IANS.

"The orders for the closure of the educational institutes are just for today, but in the evening a review meeting would be taken to decide the further course of action," said Singh.

Additional forces have been deployed in sensitive locations in the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch in the Pir Panjal region.

Jammu is the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir and thousands of people from Kashmir move here during the winter with their families. The administration, therefore, is clearly leaving nothing to chance.
