PTI reported earlier today that the US administration under Donald Trump might possibly deny green cards to immigrants who have/may have availed benefits from the government in terms of food, cash etc.
The new rules which are proposed have come from the Secretary of the Homeland Security about two days ago, reported Times Now. This will take a toll on thousands of Indian immigrants living in the US.
Earlier, the Trump administration informed a federal court that it would revoke work permits shelled out to H-4 visa holders, a majority of whom are Indian-Americans. 10-12 weeks from now is when this is expected to happen.
Secretary for Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen told PTI, “Under the long-standing federal law, those seeking to immigrate to the United States must show they can support themselves financially.”
“The department takes seriously its responsibility to be transparent in its rule-making and is welcoming public comment on the proposed rule. This proposed rule will implement a law passed by Congress intended to promote immigrant self-sufficiency and protect finite resources by ensuring that they are not likely to become burdens on American taxpayers,” she added.
Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
