The Bangladesh government has rejected a request from the United States to shelter citizens of Afghanistan who face the risk of revenge attack by Taliban reprisal after the hardline Islamic group took control of the the war-torn country.
“The US is a friendly state to us. They made the request and we said ‘no’,” Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said on Monday (Aug 16).
"We're already in trouble hosting 1.1 million refugees from Myanmar," Momen said
“We’ve said we’re suffering with the Rohingya, so please don’t put us in more trouble.” Momen added.
Bangladesh hosts more than 1 million Muslim Rohingya refugees who fled Myanmar over the years following ethnic conflict with Buddhist majority.
The US reportedly made the request through the diplomatic channel between Washington and Dhaka, according to him.
Bangladesh also urged all stakeholders in Afghanistan to maintain peace and calm and ensure the safety and security of all including foreign nationals, Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Monday in a statement.
