A Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader identified as Tahiruddin opened fire at an anti-citizenship amendment act (CAA) rally in Bengal’s Murshidabad killing two protesters, India Today has reported.

The two deceased protesters have been identified as Maqbool Sheikh and Anirudh Biswas. Their kin has alleged that the police did nothing to stop the TMC block president.

As per Biswas’s son, his father used to read the Namaz everyday at the local mosque and a strike was called in the area to protest against CAA, NRC.

During the strike a few maruti vans allegedly stormed near Biswas as he was returning from the mosque and out stepped Tahiruddin who randomly opened fire.

Biswas and Sheikh were hit by the bullets and died. Hira Khatun whose brother was injured in the attack has squarely put the blame on TMC, “...TMC workers shot my brother and the Jalangi Block President from TMC helped them”.

This attack is said to have been a result of a scuffle between TMC and residents' forum 'Nagarik Mancha' which was observing a strike against CAA, NRC. The forum was reportedly ordered by TMC to lift the strike and the situation turned violent.

The local TMC MP in the Muslim majority district though has denied the charges against his party and claimed that the attack was actually the handiwork of Congress and CPM workers.
