To enable seamless biometric boarding of passengers, the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) will roll out facial recognition technology by the month-end, reports The Times of India.

The facial recognition tech has already been implemented at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad under the government’s Digi Yatra initiative. The initiative is expected to increase operational efficiency, and at the same time do away with the increasing congestion due to the manual boarding process.

“As an outcome of trials conducted and proof of concept established over 24 months ago, BIAL is implementing a biometric-based passenger boarding process at the KIA. It will ensure quick, seamless boarding for passengers,” Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) officials said.

Once the biometric system has been installed, passengers would need not to show their boarding passes and IDs at multiple checkpoints as they do currently. The system uses single-token biometrics for identification.

The first phase would only include domestic passengers. Once the domestic passenger rollout is steadied, international passengers would be included subject to government and regulatory approvals, BIAL officials told.
