Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has initiated the process of issuing daily passes using electronic ticketing machines (ETM). The move is being welcomed as the body can now avoid printing passes that were prone to forgery and around 25 trees per day are set to be saved through the initiative.

Aiming to build a digital transportation system, passengers can avail the passes from the ETM machines that used to print tickets earlier. The difference is that the passes are now going to carry the ID numbers given to passengers. Depot 28 has already done a trail run and has reportedly received a positive response. About 2.6 lakh sheets of paper will be saved in a single day.

Deccan Chronicle quoted a senior official of BMTC as saying, “You get 10,000 A4 sheets from one tree, and with this initiative we will help save 25 trees per day. It will also reduce the financial burden on the corporation. Soon, we will also introduce smart-cards for both daily and monthly passes. This will be convenient for commuters and also reduce pressure on the corporation and our crew, who handle large amounts of cash. But that will take another two to three months.”
