Necessary clearances will be provided by Government of Karnataka for the suburban rail project in Bengaluru, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said on Thursday, 27 December. To lay the foundation stone, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be invited to the city, he added.

After discussing the project with Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, he directed the officials to provide the necessary clearances within three days’ time. The project is estimated to cost Rs 17,147.20 crore. The state government hasn’t clarified on the cost-sharing proposal.

Funds will be allocated in the next budget that will be presented by the central government. After Rail India Technical and Economic Services (Rites Ltd) conducted a feasibility report, it is noted that the project will have an elevated stretch and four corridors. Furthermore, Deccan Herald reported that a link might be extended to Kempegowda International Airport.

52 new stations will be constructed and the report has recommended that the government integrate different modes of transport as a part of the project such as inter-city rail, metro, buses etc.

The report also states that the corridor can carry nearly 10 lakh people everyday by 2025 and will de-congest Bengaluru’s traffic.
