In a major development, Reliance Jio has approached the department of telecommunication (DoT) to assigning the 5G spectrum for field trials in a few selected cities, reports Inc24.

Notably, the announcement comes only 2 days after the Mukesh-Ambani led telecom giant had announced the development of an indigenous 5G network.

As per one Business Standard report, Reliance Jio is seeking 800 megahertz (MHz) spectrum each in both the millimetres (26 gigahertz (GHz) and 24 GHz ) wave mmWave band as well as 100 MHz in the 3.5 GHz band for field trials in few metro cities.

The successful trails would enable the network to join a list of handful companies worldwide having their own 5G technology that they can sell to the world.

The announcement gains significance, as the government considers promoting Indian manufacturers and technology companies in telecom.

In the wake of the recent border tussle with China the development of an Indian 5G solution is significant as there is anticipation that Chinese 5G solution major Huawei may not be allowed to participate in India's much anticipated 5G trials.

Earlier on Wednesday (15 July), Ambani had announced that Reliance Jio has developed a complete 5G solution from scratch. Speaking at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of RIL, Ambani said that the "Made-in-India" technology can be deployed and launched in a year's time once spectrum is available.

He added that Jio can easily upgrade its 4G network to 5G , since it is all-IP network architecture.
