The newly appointed B S Yediyurappa government in Karnataka has chosen to give tourism in the state a major push. Towards this, he has appointed Chairperson of Infosys Foundation, Sudha Murty, as the head of the State Tourism Task Force, reports Star of Mysore.

Yediyurappa had invited Murty to a meeting of the Tourism and Culture Department on Sunday, wherein he announced the constitution of the task force and her appointment as its chair.

According to sources, Yediyurappa is of the view that a big push in tourism will create job opportunities on multiple fronts, and in the process, help build Brand Karnataka.

“The new task force will meet once a week and I will attend all the meetings. Our goal must be reached,” he said at the meeting.

Sudha Murty is known for empowering underprivileged people through education and healthcare. She is also known for her keen interest in tourism and is spearheading a project to restore monuments of historical importance at Melukote, a famous Sri Vaishnava spiritual ecosystem, in Mandya district.

Melukote has over 100 monuments such as ponds, ‘Kalyanis’ (step ponds), temples and other structures. Many are, however, on the verge of collapse or being consigned to the pages of history.

The Infosys Foundation chairperson is also involved in developing Hebbal Lake in Mysuru, a 40-acre water body, as a tourist destination. An MoU has been signed by the Foundation and the Mysuru district administration to restore this lake. The welfare arm of the software giant will spend Rs 30 crore on the project.
