In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting the education and schooling system across the nation, the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) has directed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to reduce the syllabus for students from Classes ninth to twelfth by 30 per cent, reports Indian Express.

The reduction and rationalisation of the overall syllabus for these classes will be undertaken by retaining core concepts.

An official statement from the CBSE following MHRD's directive asked the Heads of Schools and teachers to ensure that the students are also explained the portions of the reduced syllabus to the extent required to connect different topics, even though the same would not be part of the topics for internal assessments and the year-end board examinations.

In addition to this, the CBSE-affiliated schools have also been empowered to rationalise the syllabus on their own for students of up to class eighth.

The decision has been taken after the MHRD had called for suggestions from different stakeholders, who had sent in over 1,500 suggestions to the Ministry.
