A Bihar police officer who made a Home Guard jawan do squats and fall at the feet of an agriculture officer as punishment for stopping his car, was suspended on Wednesday (22 April), reports India Today.

The report quotes Director General of Police Gupteshwar Pandey as saying, “I called up the chowkidar and apologised on behalf of the erring police official since it is imperative that we do not allow the morale of any of our personnel to sag.”

Pandey further stated that Additional Sub Inspector of Police Govind Singh has been suspended for the inhuman treatment of the home guard jawan.

Earlier, a video had gone viral on social media that showed a home guard being punished after he asked an agriculture officer for a pass amid the nationwide lockdown imposed due to novel coronavirus.

The incident happened under Jokihat police station area of the district where jawan Ganesh Lal had flagged down the vehicle of District Agriculture Officer Manoj Kumar, which was reportedly plying without a valid pass.

In the video, one can see the agricultural officer along with his colleague admonishing the jawan. Afterwards, another police official, identified as ASI Govind Singh, joins them in berating the jawan saying, "How could you stop him... he is a senior agricultural officer."

He was later made to perform 50 squats and prostate before the officer as a form of repentance.
