Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Bihar's Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Thursday (18 April 2019) filed a defamation case against Congress President Rahul Gandhi for his reported statement in a rally that "all thieves have Modi in their surnames".

Modi, taking grave offence, apprised the media that he has filed a case through his lawyer at Patna's Chief Judicial Magistrate's court under the Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), reports Economic Times.

The case is expected to be heard in the court on 22 April 2019, he added.

This adds to the troubles for Congress chief against whom the Supreme Court (SC) had also issued a notice on 15 April 2015 seeking explanation from him on a criminal contempt petition filed by BJP Member of Parliament (MP) Meenakshi Lekhi for allegedly attributing to the top court his remarks on the Rafale verdict and trying to mislead the voters.

The SC has asked Gandhi to file his response to the notice by 22 April 2019, the day when further hearing on the matter will be pursued.
