Narendra Modi and Amit Shah

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah addressed a joint press conference at the party headquarters in New Delhi on Friday (17 May).

Shah began the conference by speaking about the end of a long and fruitful Lok Sabha campaign and welcomed Prime Minister Modi to the press meet. He thanked the people of the country for what he claimed was an outpouring of support for the party and reminisced about the BJP’s historic victory in 2014.

He asserted that the upcoming Lok Sabha results would provide an even bigger mandate in favour of the BJP due to an effective electoral campaign including initiatives like Main Bhi Chowkidar. Shah expressed confidence that the BJP will win over 300 seats this time round.

He also praised various supporter campaigns during the electoral process, out of which slogans like Aayega to Modi hi, Modi hai to mumkin hai emerged.

Shah listed various developmental projects the NDA government and recounted various achievements of the government.

He said that out of the 120 Lok Sabha seats which the BJP did not win in 2014, the party is contesting 80 of them this time round and has a high chance of winning this time round.

He also dismissed the threat of the Mahagathbandhan by stating that the party has won over 50 per cent votes in states like Tripura.

After being quizzed over Mamata Banerjee’s accusations of violence, Shah lashed out at the West Bengal Chief Minister by stressing that 80 BJP workers have died in the state in the last one and a half years.

He said that if the BJP was indeed as violent as Mamata claims then why would similar electoral crimes not be committed in other states where the party is contesting the polls.

Over Sadhvi Pragya’s candidature, Shah stated that it is a form of Satyagraha against the fake Hindu terror narrative peddled during the UPA period and demanded that the Congress apologise for the same.
