The body of Soumya Santhosh who was killed in a rocket attack by Palestinian Islamist group in Israel was brought back to India on Saturday (15 May).

“With a heavy heart, I received the mortal remains of Ms Soumya Santhosh in Delhi and paid my last respects. CDA of the Israel Embassy also joined. I empathise with the pain and sufferings of the family of Ms Soumya. More strength to them,” V Muraleedharan, minister of state for external affairs said in a tweet.

On 11 May, the deadly rocket directly struck a home where an elderly woman and her caregiver, 32-year-old Soumya Santhosh, lived. Santhosh was killed in the attack while her elderly charge, 80, was hospitalized in serious condition.

Santosh hailed from Kerala and is reportedly survived by her husband and nine-year-old kid.

Palestinian terror groups in the Gaza Strip fired massive barrages of rockets at middle and southern Israel from past few days.

In response, the Israeli defence forces retaliated by airstrikes on terror targets in the Gaza strip.

The cross-border violence, which erupted on 10 May following weeks of rising tensions in the contested city of Jerusalem, is the worst the region has experienced in a year.

The Palestinian terror outfit Hamas reportedly claimed that at one stage on 11 May it fired 137 rockets in around five minutes in an apparent attempt to overwhelm the Iron Dome missile defense system.
