Rudrappa V Hosamani, a 59-year-old Kabbadi coach with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) allegedly committed suicide in a Bengaluru hotel room after being accused of molesting a teenage girl at a training centre in the city.

The Kabaddi coach was booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) act for allegedly molesting a 13-year-old in a dressing room of Sports Authority of India (SAI) campus near Bangalore University. The girl raised an alarm in and rushed out in tears while calling out for her mother. Her father and uncle reportedly assaulted the coach later.

A committee was set up by SAI to investigate the incident and it recommended the suspension of Hosamani as well as the lodging of a police complaint. The Bengaluru police subsequently registered a case under the act.

On 13 October, Hosamani checked into a hotel in Davanagere’s Harihar town and did not step out of his room for a long time, following which the staff alerted the police. Police said they broke open the door and found him hanging.

Hosamani left behind a suicide note addressed to his close family and friends. “He apologised to them for what he did. He said he was helpless. He asked his son to look after Devika and to donate his body,” a Times of India report claimed.

Hosamani’s body was handed over to his relatives following a postmortem conducted at Harihar Government Hospital on Monday (15 October).
