Pointsman Mayur Shelke who saved the life of a child with rare courage and presence of mind has appealed to everyone who wants to offer him awards and gifts to donate the money to the visually-impaired mother and her child.

He has also donated half the money from the Rs 50,000 award given to him by the Ministry of Railways to them, reports Mid Day.

“These are difficult times of Covid-19 pandemic and all those who wish to donate money, hand over cheques to me can offer the money to the mother and the child or any other needy in these times,” he said in an appeal on social media.

The incident showing Pointsman Mayur Shelke's courage happened on 17 April evening at Vangani Station of Central Railway in Thane and the feat earned him appreciation from across the country.

As per CCTV footage, a visually-handicapped woman is seen carrying a heavy rucksack walking on the platform when a 6-year-old child accompanying her suddenly seems to stumble and fall onto the railway tracks below.

The footage also shows the Bengaluru-Mumbai Udayan Express train speeding on the same track when the Pointsman Shelke is seen running on that track from the opposite direction to help the boy.

As the train speed headlong before him, he seemed to hesitate momentarily, but continued to sprint and helped up the child who was trying to clamber on the high platform.

Shelke pushed the child up and also desperately hoisted himself as barely a second later the train zoomed onto the platform, but both the kid and his guardian angel were saved virtually by a hair's breadth.
