Atul Rai (Pic via Facebook)
Due to giving false information about the number of cases against him in his election affidavit, an FIR has been filed against Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Atul Rai from Ghosi constituency by Assistant District Election Officer Shabbir Ahmad, reports The New Indian Express.
In his affidavit, Rai had revealed information about only 13 pending cases against him, although in reality that number is 24. He has now been booked under various provisions of the IPC, including furnishing false information (Section 177) and forgery (Section 420).
Rai is currently remanded in judicial custody in a separate case where he is a rape accused. He had been absconding in the case even when the elections were taking place, and only yesterday (22 June) surrendered himself at Judicial Magistrate Ashutosh Tiwari’s court.
Even during his campaign, Rai was not to be seen, with instead his wife Priyanka Rai and brother Pavan Rai being called upon by Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav to maintain his innocence.
Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
