Calcutta HC Asks Wife Of Mamata’s Nephew To Appear Before Custom Officials Over Allegedly Obstructing Their Duty

Calcutta High Court on Thursday (4 April) asked Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee's wife to present herself before the joint director of customs on 8 April, reports Times Of India (TOI).
The court, however, refrained the customs authorities from taking any adverse steps against Rujira Naroola. Abhishek Banerjee is also the nephew of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
This development pertains to the summons issued by the principal commissioner (customs) on 26 March to Banerjee's wife for obstructing authorities from performing their duties at the Kolkata airport.
Following this, she moved a writ petition challenging the legality of the summons. Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj of the High Court had directed the customs department to file an affidavit in the case and stated that the matter would be listed in May.
Earlier Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told a Supreme Court (SC) bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi that central enforcement agencies were in a “perpetual state of fear” and were being hounded for performing their duties in the state. "There is a constitutional anarchy in West Bengal if I may say it succinctly," said Mehta.
Citing the incident of Banerjee’s wife at the airport which prompted the Calcutta High Court’s order, Mehta added, "This lady was stopped at the Kolkata airport by the custom officials to check her luggage. She also happens to be the wife of a sitting MP of the ruling party. Suddenly local police start coming in and asking the custom officials to stop from their duties," said Mehta.
