Calcutta High Court Raps Mamata Banerjee Government Over Restrictions On Immersion Of Durga Idols

Calcutta High Court today rapped the Mamata Banerjee government for imposing restrictions on immersion of idols of goddess Durga, saying that the government can’t restrict the way society follows rituals, Times Now has reported.
“Calcutta High Court raps Mamata Government over the Durga immersion rules, says can't restrict way society follows rituals,” the channel said.
“When you (state govt) are firm there is communal harmony in the state, why are you creating communal distinction between the two? Let them live in harmony do not create a line between them. Let them live together,” the court observed, according to the Financial Express. “Why can’t two communities celebrate together?” the court asked the government to explain.
Chief Minister Banerjee had earlier announced that immersion of Durga idols would have to be done by 6 pm on 30 September. The following day was kept for Taazia procession during Muharram. She said no immersion would be allowed on 1 October in order to prevent Puja festivities from clashing with Muharram.
“There will be no immersions on October 1 due to Muharram. However, immersions will resume on 2 October and continue till 4 October – the day before Lakshmi Puja,” Banerjee had tweeted back then.
