The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an elective subject to make school students well-versed in technologies shaping the future.

“The decision to introduce artificial intelligence as a skill subject was taken at a recent meeting of the board’s governing body. It has been decided that the subject would be introduced in classes 8, 9 and 10 as a skill subject,” said a board member.

The syllabus is to be drafted for all three classes and, if needed, the board will also help in capacity building of schools for teaching-learning of the new subject, reports Hindustan Times.

AI will be an optional subject on the vocational side. The new subject idea germinated from a session held at the government’s policy think tank, NITI Aayog, and CBSE followed up to include it as an academic course.

Another remarkable measure by CBSE is to use two sets of question papers - one easy and one standard - for analysing the ability of class 10 students. Students who do not wish to take up maths in higher studies can opt for the easier test and if a student who has opted to take the easier test later decides to take the standard one, they will be allowed to do so in July.
