Central Govt Approves Rs 2135 Crore For Scheme To Enhance Weather Forecasting Services

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi-led Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved Rs 2,135 crore for the continuation of the Atmospheric and Climate Research-Modelling Observing Systems and Services (ACROSS).
ACROSS aims to enhance and upgrade India’s weather forecasting and climate services, Indian Express reports.
The initiative even targets rolling out the latest computing infrastructure and capabilities to attain the concerned objective as well.
Financial support will be provided to implement eight sub-schemes under ACROSS throughout the next finance cycle from 2021-26.
The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) will be in-charge of bringing about the concerned eight sub-schemes through its organisations like the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), Noida, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) will be vastly contributing in five sub-schemes, namely: commissioning of polarimetric doppler weather radars in the country, atmospheric observations network, study of monsoon and clouds, weather and climate services and upgradation of forecasting services in the next five years.
