Central Vista Redevelopment: Govt Announces Design Contest To Build “Iconic Structure” On Western Bank Of Yamuna

The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has launched a design competition for the construction of an 'iconic structure' on the bank of Yamuna river as a part of the ambitious Central Vista redevelopment project, reports Hindustan Times.
The 'iconic structure' is proposed to be erected on New India Gardens (Nav Bharat Udyan) which is proposed to be built on Yamuna's Western Bank and is expected to be unveiled to the nation by 15 August 2022 when India shall complete 75 years of independence from usurious British Raj.
The design submissions for the competition will have to be completed by 11 December following which the winners will be announced by the last week of December.
The structure can be a tower or a sculpture or any other form besides a building that can be occupied, with the maximum permissible height of 134 metres from the present ground level in accordance with the colour coded zonal map prepared by Airports Authority of India.
"The iconic structure should realise the grand vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, symbolising emerging New India with equitable growth opportunities, rooted in values of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikaas, Sabka Vishwaas (with all, for everyone's development, with everyone's trust) and representing the aspiration of clean India, free from poverty, corruption, terrorism, communalism and casteism," the ministry stated in the statement.
The structure will be a part of a larger complex which will also comprise of entertainment facilities and showcase the nation's rich cultural and historical heritage. These will include facilities such as the “Sphere of Unity”, “Milestones Walkway”, “Journey of India”, “Tech Dome”, “Amphitheatre”.
It should be noted that the New India Gardens will come upon the central axis which extends from Rashtrapati Bhawan to India Gate while passing through North Block, South Block and Raj Path. With the establishment of the aforementioned iconic structure and the New India Gardens, the central axis' length would have been extended from present 2.9 kilometres to 6.3 kilometres.
