The Centre today (27 April) sought a two week extension from the Supreme Court of India to prepare its draft water sharing scheme for the Kaveri river that is currently under dispute between the two southern states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, reports The Hindu. On 9 April a bench of the apex court led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra had told the Centre to frame its scheme as per the 15 February order by 3 May to end the 200-year old dispute.

On 16 February, the SC had directed the Centre to finalise the scheme by 29 March which the Centre sought to defer by a period of three months, till the Karnataka assembly polls were over. Karnataka votes on 12 May.

The court was hearing the contempt petition filed by Tamil Nadu against the Centre. It has asked both states to maintain peace till the dispute is resolved.
