To augment the safety measures, the Southern Railway is now planning to refurbish its EMU rakes, that are older than 25 years, fitting them with CCTV cameras, smoke detectors among others, reports, Times of India.

As an initial step, the Chennai division of the zone has spent at least Rs 5 lakhs, to redo the interiors by adding CCTV cameras in the ladies coach. Also being done are, replacing the slippery floors and installing fans with bigger blades.

One 12-car rake from Tambaram, one 9-car rake from Avadi and another 9-car from Velachery shed have been refurbished. A new colour coding of pink, blue and green are given to the first class and regular coaches to make identification easier.

For the benefit of the first time travellers, a map of suburban railway has been put up in these coaches, thus making them aware of the railway corridors and the station they have to alight.

Along with the safer, heavy duty modular switches, the windows of the rakes are provided with sun control film to make it easier for the commuters to sit by the window.
