A sub-inspector of police named SK Sharma was martyred in Chhattisgarh in a gunfight with Maoist militants on Friday (8 May) night, reports Hindustan Times.

The gunfight had erupted in Chhattisgarh's Rajnandgaon district at around 10.30 pm in the night in the jungles when a police team was out on an anti-Maoist operation. The police team had launched the operation after it had received pin-point intelligence about the presence of Maoists.

While the team was cordoning Pardhoni village of the district, the Maoists opened fire on the forces, leading to a fierce gunfight.

The operation saw gunning down of four Maoists, including the killing of a divisional committee member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) named Ashok, and an area committee member named Krishna.

Apart from them, the other two Maoists killed belonged to the junior women cadres and identified as Sarita and Pramila.

The police team has also recovered an AK-47 assault rifle, one SLR and two 315 bore rifles from the site, and is continuing search in the entire area.
