State of Working India (SWI) report published by the Centre for Sustainable Employment at Azim Premji University showed that the rate of joblessness among the youth is 16 per cent, Financial Express has reported. This indicates that India is failing to create high-quality jobs in spite of high economic growth.

However, Gujarat, Karnataka and Chattisgarh have been outliers. While Gujarat and Karnataka maintained a low unemployment rate, Chattisgarh has registered a decline.

The report also says that the lack of good jobs in the private sector has lead to a greater demand for public sector jobs as they are seen as ‘secure’ jobs. An example of this is 2.3 million applications for 400 Class IV jobs in Uttar Pradesh. Among them, 1,50,000 of them were graduates.
