Two cops have been arrested in Chhattisgarh on charges of selling weapons to Maoists, Indian Express has reported.

A special investigation team (SIT) headed by Sukma’s Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) has been formed to investigate the matter.

The matter began when the police received a tip-off on 4 June about two men carrying 400 rounds of SLR ammunition. In the subsequent police action two more men were arrested who then led them to the cops who are designated as the head constable and assistant sub-inspector respectively.

The duo were tasked with maintaining ammunition stocks for the cops and were allegedly pilfering it and selling it to the Maoists in exchange of a commission.

A police officer has been quoted as saying that the two cops had sold arms and uniforms to the Maoists in the past.

“They would charge a commission on the cost of the ammunition. There is a possibility that they have supplied arms, uniforms and caps as well in the past. We are investigating”, the cop was quoted as saying.
