China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi met India's envoy in Beijing, Pradeep Kumar Rawat, on Wednesday (23 June) to discuss bilateral relations, including the boundary situation, ahead of the BRICS leaders' summit.

During the meeting, Wang outlined "four pronged perseverance" for India-China relations. The Chinese Foreign Minister called on the two countries "persevere in putting the boundary issue in an appropriate place in bilateral relations" and "persevere in the important strategic consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries".

"Wang Yi said, the two sides should work in the same direction to maintain the warming momentum in China-India relations and bring them back to the track of stable and sound development at an early date," the Chinese readout of the meeting said, adding, "The common interests between China and India far outweigh the differences."

The Indian envoy to Beijing "agreed and emphasised" the importance of restoring tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control.

"Ambassador agreed and emphasised the criticality of maintenance of peace and tranquility in the border areas for realizing the full potential...Wang Yi said that the border issue is important and we should stay committed to peacefully addressing it through consultation and coordination," the Indian Embassy in Beijing said in a statement.

"Wang Yi recalled his meeting with Dr S Jaishankar during his visit in New Delhi in March 2022 and mentioned that the Chinese side attached importance to the Indian side's concerns regarding return of Indian students and that he hoped to see early progress on this," it added.
