In an unprecedented development, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi will preside over the Supreme Court’s vacation bench from 25 to 30 May during the summer holidays, reports DNA.

According to the report, the apex court’s summer vacations will start on Monday (13 May) and go on till 30 June.

CJI Gogoi will preside over the vacation bench with Justice MR Shah for the last six working days of May. Usually, the CJI does not preside over vacation benches.

As per the report, due to the possibility of the plethora of petitions that are expected to be filed and the disputes that may arise during the formation of the new government after the Lok Sabha elections results are out on 23 May, the CJI Gogoi will himself preside over the vacation bench for one week.

Apart from CJI Gogoi and Justice MR Shah, Justices Indu Malhotra, Indira Banerjee, Sanjiv Khanna, L Nageswara Rao and Ajay Rastogi will preside over the vacation benches for different periods.

Under the Supreme Court Rules, 2013, the CJI can nominate judges to the vacation bench of the court, which is meant to hear miscellaneous matters and regular hearing matters while the summer break is on.
