The horticulture department will be installing two fine dust eaters to combat air pollution around Cubbon Park in Bengaluru, Deccan Herald has reported. With pollution increasing, various steps such as banning vehicles at night and on weekends are in place.

However, things have not improved much as a study by Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) in 2017 has shown a rise in dust in the air across the park. The bad quality of air has also adversely impacted photosynthesis in plants according to an official who spoke to Deccan Herald.

To combat the problem, fine dust eaters are being installed as a pilot scheme by the Horticulture Department on the advice of ecologist Y N Yellappa Reddy. They will absorb the suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the air within a 200-300 meter radius.

German Company Mann+Hummel is providing the purifiers at free of cost, "A German delegation visited the KSPCB office recently and explained the workings of the machine. We have decided to use them in Cubbon Park. The company is giving them free of charge," a senior horticulture official has said.

Depending on the success of the scheme in public, air purifiers may be installed in various public places. One machine will be installed in the corner of the park that has high air pollution while another will be installed on a car that will move around the park.
