Maharashtra: CM Shinde Lifts Order Of Previous MVA Government Curtailing CBI's Powers In The State

In a boost for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Shinde-Fadnavis government overturned the order that made it mandatory for the agency to seek permission from the state government before launching an investigation in Maharashtra.
The order was passed by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Agadhi government on October 21, 2020.
With this, the MVA government attempted to curb the powers of CBI to conduct inquiries in Maharashtra.
Before Maharashtra, Rajasthan and West Bengal government, too, had withdrew the 'general consent'.
The MVA government had made the move at a time when Mumbai Police was conducting an inquiry against Republic TV over an alleged TRP scam. However, the CBI took over the probe based on an FIR filed in Uttar Pradesh.
By withdrawing the restrictions imposed on the central agency, the Shinde government has made a significant political point.
