Coal India Continues Push Towards Processing Boost, To Commission 18 New Washeries By 2020

It has been reported that state-run coal major Coal India Limited (CIL) plans to commission a total of 18 new washeries by 2020 with nine of these washeries dedicated for processing coking coal and the remaining handling non-coking coal.
The company currently operates 15 coal washeries which have a capacity of processing 36.8 MT of coal per year. Out of these 15 coal washeries, 11 are dedicated to processing coking coal and the remaining manage the processing of non-coking coal.
A coal ministry official elaborated upon the proposal to set up new washeries by observing that “two of these washeries have already been inaugurated in Bharat Coalfields and the rest are going to come up in a phased manner till December 2020. This will add a capacity of around 28.1 million tonnes for coking coal and 67.5 MT for non-coking coal”.
In related news, the company also intends to set up a project which would convert coal into methanol with the same coming up at Dankuni, West Bengal.
