Municipal Administration Minister for Tamil Nadu, S P Velumani, has announced that the state government has allocated Rs 75 crore as compensation for those whose lands were acquired for expansion of the city airport.

He said a total of Rs 1,500 crore will be distributed as compensation for acquisition of about 650 acres and its first phase of Rs 75 crore would be released to landowners in another 10 days.

“The landowners will be paid the price they had agreed upon, i.e. Rs 1,500/sq ft for residential land and Rs 900/sq ft for agricultural land,” added the official.

On being questioned about the process of fund allotment, the official said, the officials will start by verifying the owners' details and measuring the land in all sub-divisions. “We have to verify the documents and pattas of the lands. If both are under the same name, then we will give them the money for their lands. In case their patta is in a different name, like that of a deceased relative, we will ask the owners of the land to transfer the patta in their name with the tahsildar’s office and after that, hand over the money”.
