Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi reaffirmed the $5 trillion economy target in five years and said that the government will invest Rs 100 lakh crore in modernising the nation’s infrastructure to achieve it.

“To some the target of nearly doubling the size of Indian economy to $5 trillion in five years may seem difficult. But when we have in five years (of the BJP rule) added USD 1 trillion as compared to USD 2 trillion size achieved in 70 years of independence, then this target is achievable,” the PM said.

Speaking on the reforms undertaken to streamline the economy, he added that the government will invest Rs 100 lakh crore to modernise ports, highways, railways, airports, hospitals and educational institutions across the country.

PM Modi also laid out the target to break into the top 50 nations in the Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) which currently places India at the 77th position. India was ranked 142 of 190 nations in 2014 when the Modi government assumed office.
