The communist political parties of India seem set for a historical washout in the present Lok Sabha elections, with none of their candidates having a lead in states like West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura where they have traditionally had a strong presence.

West Bengal has turned out to be an essentially two-way competition between Trinamool and the BJP, while in Kerala, the Left Democratic Front’s candidates trail their opponents from the Congress-Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) combine.

In Tripura, the BJP leads both the state’s constituencies. Also, the Communist Party of India’s candidate for the high profile fight in Bihar’s Begusarai, Kanhaiya Kumar, is trailing his rival from the BJP Giriraj Singh by more than 90,000 votes.
