Congress party's Assam unit president Ripun Bora has tendered in his resignation from the post following the party's defeat in the just-concluded State Assembly elections to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies, reports News18.
A sitting member of the Rajya Sabha, in his letter to Sonia Gandhi, Bora owned the responsibility for the Congress party's poor show in the elections. He wrote, "I do hereby tender my resignation from the post of President, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee owing to the responsibility of the humiliating defeat of my party in the Assam Assembly Election 2021."
He added, "However, I pledge to continue my fight as a dedicated Congressman to uphold the ideology and values of Indian National Congress. Madam, I shall be ever grateful to you for assigning me with such a great responsibility of President, Assam PCC to serve my party."
Out of the 140 seats, Congress only managed a win on 30 seats in total. Also, Bora, who had himself contested the election from the Gohpur seat, lost to BJP's sitting MLA Utpal Borah by a margin of 29,294 votes.
