Rahul Gandhi-led Congress’s jibe against Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Mai Bhi Chowkidar’ campaign has invited the wrath of workers’ union Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS).

The RSS-affiliate union argues that Rahul Gandhi’s remark is offensive to security guards who work hard to protect other people’s life and property, and has threatened to launch a nation-wide strike over the ‘derogatory’ remark.

"It has become a fashion to raise such derogatory slogans in poll meetings and the Congress should apologise to the watchmen in the country for their character assassination," BMS General Secretary Virjesh Upadhyay was quoted as saying in a statement by The New Indian Express.

The general secretary said that the Congress president was using these "undignified" words "to insult the whole security guards community".

If this attack on the character and dignity of watchmen community is not stopped then the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh will be forced to take stringent action and a nation-wide agitation would be launched, he said.

As part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) campaign before the general elections this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted a video on twitter with the hashtag ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ (I am also a watchman) yesterday. After Modi released the video, #MainBhiChowkidar became Twitter's top worldwide trend with close to 45,000 retweets and around 1,22,000 likes currently.
